Brahmam Okate ( God is One)…..

Sri Annamarcharya is a very famous poet who had sang many devotional hymns on Lord Venkatchalapathi. He is the reincarnation of Sri Narayana’s Nandaki Sword. Like a sword, his poems cuts through the confusion, doubts, and cobwebs of mundane living to reveal the supreme TRUTH who stands SRI VENKATACHALAPATHI on the 7 hills.

One of the poems he wrote, is Brahmam Okate.. The lyrics and translation given below.

tandanAnA Ahi tandanAnA purE tandanAna bhALa tandanAnA bhaLA

brahmamokaTE para brahmamokaTE brahmamokaTE para brahmamokaTE

There is only one BRAHMAM- SUPREME BRAHMAM

kanduvagu hInAdhikamu lindulEvu andariki shrI harE antarAtmA

There is no such thing as a low person as in everyone, SRI HARI resides in the HEART.

indulO jantukulamu intA okaTE andariki shrI harE antarAtmA

Here, all living things is ONE, as in everyone/thing, SRI HARI resides in the HEART.

ninDAra rAjU nidrincu nidrayu okaTE anDanE baNTu nidra adiyu okaTE

The sleep of a KING is ONE (SAME), like the sleep of his servants.

meNDaina brahmANuDu meTTu bhUmi okaTE caNDAlundEti sari bhUmi okaTE

The greater land of BRAHMINS(REALISED,educated people) is ONE(SAME), like the EARTH of the CHANDALAS(uneducated, uncivilised people).

anugu dEvatalakunu ala kAma sukhamokaTE ghanakITa pashuvulaku kAmasukham okaTE

The sense pleasues of the great celestial beings is the SAME ONE like those experienced by the animals kingdoms too.

dIna mahOrAtramulu tegi dhanAdyuna-kokaTE vonara nirupEdakunu okaTE aviyu

DAY and NIGHT is the SAME ONE for those are RICH or POOR.

koralu SiSTnnamulu gonu nAkkalokaTE tirugu duSTAnnamulu dinu nAkkalokaTE

The tongue that tastes the delicious food and the horrible tasting food is also the SAME ONE.

paragu durgandhamulapai vAyuvokaTE varusha parimaLamupai vAyuvokaTE

The Breeze that brings fragrance and also the foul smell is the SAME ONE.

kaDagi Enugu mIda kAyu eNda okaTE pudami suanakamu mIda bolayu-nendokaTE

Finally to say, the sunlight is the SAME ONE that warms the elephant or bird.

kaDu puNyalanu pApa karmulanu sarigAva jaDiyu shrI venkaTEShvaru nAma-mokaTE

The NAME IS ONE: SRI VENKATESHWARA , that EVENS both good deeds and bad deeds.

Thaye Yesodha

  • Movie-Morning Raga
  • Song-Thaye Yesodha-Thodi

Thaaye Yashoda was composed by one of my favourite composers, Oothukaadu Venkatasubbiyer. He is one of the lesser recognised amongst Carnatic (Bhakti) composers (unlike Thiagaraja or Dikshitar). There is so much love in the lyrics that I find it difficult not to let myself get carried away when he describes the various antics of Sri Krishna. Some of the finest poetry has been composed in describing the playful young Krishna as well as the romantic Krishna (well, poets don’t seem to have been interested in his ever famous Gitopadesha!).  The introduction of English lyrics (as a translation of “undan paiyannai pOlavE inda vayyagattil oru piLLai ammamma nAn kaNDadillai” which means “I haven’t seen any other child in this entire world, like your (Yashoda’s) son Krishna”)
